As the workforce continues to change and new demands are expected to be met, remote work has become a sought-after perk on the job market. The ability to work from a different town, city, state or even country from the headquarters of your employer leaves employees with the freedom to live where they want, while still working for a company of their choice. Today, almost 5 million people work remotely and with previous growth records, this number should continue to rise.

Because remote work is a new common practice and is one that previous generations didn’t offer, the best resources to support this type of work are just as new. The capacity in which these tools can also support this type of work is just being explored as well. There are many tools out there that can make remote employees still feel included while they are miles away.

The first issue many remote employees run into is the inability to communicate with their coworkers or supervisors as often as necessary. Although, face-to-face time should not be avoided altogether as this can provide for building stronger, more meaningful business relationships. So, building a remote team with mandatory office meet-ups can prove to build successful, positive relationships with your entire team.

There are a lot of companies out there who build office spaces that are able to be rented out for different uses. These companies often come with fully-stocked meeting spaces that are affordable to those who are in need of one. Top providers often come with high-quality presentation tools, fax/copy abilities, and even on-site catering. 

Remote employees can also rent these professional working environments that are not in their homes to feel like they are working in an office environment, even if they are not close to their company’s office. This is also a popular practice if there are enough remote workers in one area or if your team shows interest in traveling for conferences or team building. Some business leaders even do this if they’re meeting a potential customer and want to do so in a quiet area close to their potential buyer and need a space of their own.

It’s important to keep remote employees engaged, which can prove to be a challenge with the disconnect of location. Staying in the playing field of digital tools for remote employees, businesses can adopt digital software that assists with this. 

Many digital software tools can improve employee engagement with their offerings. For example, most human capital management services, offer many different products that both employers and employees can find beneficial to their work and personal lives. Professionally, these tools can automate HR tasks and recruiting for different companies. To benefit the personal lives of employees, these services often include different friendly competitions that can promote healthy lifestyle choices with wellness trackers, as well as map out different ways to volunteer in their towns and build skills in different areas of life. 

Although increasing in popularity, remote work is still being explored and the tools that make this happen are being discovered every day. In a study conducted on 2,500 people, workplace flexibility was the most important aspect of job choice. Working remotely promotes this, which is why this study also found that 99% of employees want to work remotely at least some of the time in their careers. Once thought to be a trend that would blow over in popularity, it appears to be here to stay as younger generations take over the workplace.
